Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler started up as a Japanese manga. From the content, the visuals to the unique features of each character, it’s all very attractive, with great majority of viewers. In Kakegurui, everything takes place at Hyakkaou Private Academy – where everyone’s worth is determined by gambling. Although not everywhere, but it is always there when you need to deal with anyone you find “thorny”. And this is run under the administration of the Student Council. The surface of the gambling problem is that but hidden behind it, this aims to a higher purpose, which is the management and control of society. Here are 10 Facts About Kakegurui:
Category of gambling
Manga can cover many different topics. In the case of Kakegurui, it focuses on high stakes gambling. What’s even more interesting, however, is that it is far from being the only manga that focuses on the aforementioned subject matter, which may be of interest to those who love this particular series.
Set in a school for the elite
Kakegurui is one of the series set in schools for the elite. In short, Hyakkaou Private Academy is a school for the children of the rich and powerful in Japan. As a result, most of them will become members of the rich and powerful in Japan.
There is a strict hierarchy in schools
The social hierarchy is quite ubiquitous whenever and wherever people gather in large numbers. However, the Hyakkaou Private Academy’s social hierarchy is much more formalized than most, considering how it is determined by each student’s contribution to the school’s student council.
There is a gambling system
It’s not uncommon to hear stories of all sorts of mischief happening at schools, but Hyakkaou Private Academy takes things to the extreme. In short, there is a system in which students gamble large sums of money while playing with each other, which has a huge impact on their ability to make a contribution to the student council.
Debt bondage is a thing
Debt slavery is a serious issue that doesn’t get much attention, so it might be a bit surprising to see it appear in the ubiquitous anime. Regardless, students who are unable to contribute to the student council because of their gambling debt will have the suspicious status of “pets,” basically just another way of saying that they become slaves debt payments to anyone who keeps their debt.
Debt slavery lasts outside of school
To make the stakes even higher, the debt bondage extended beyond Hyakkaou Private Academy. Simply put, those who are still in debt by the time they graduate from school end up with what the series calls a Life Schedule, which determines what they will do with their life as well as who they can get married to.
The main character gambles for thrills
Given the full title of the series, it is perhaps not surprising to learn that protagonist Yumeko Jabami bets the thrills over status or wealth that some of her classmates are interested in. In other words, she would be the compulsive gambler in the full title, though she takes it much further than most.
The main character has a snake Motif
Speaking of which, it’s no coincidence that the main character has a snake motif. Some of her students frankly call her a snake that has slipped into their metaphorical paradise. Furthermore, “Ja” in Jabami can be read as “snake”. In the end, she is sometimes even drawn with tilted irises seen on some snakes when she’s aroused by gambling.
The main character is being cut by Hime Cut
The main character has a hime cut, which can be summed up as the front edge, long and straight hair that tends to reach the cheeks, and long, straight hair in the back. It is a very special look developed among noble women during the Heian period, which explains why it is still associated with it as such. Speaking of which, it’s not a coincidence that the main character gets their hime cut off.
The main character can deceive
With that said, the hime cuts are pretty deceptive as well. The protagonist may look like a Japanese archetype called yamato nadeshiko, but in reality, she is cunning, quite likely to be haunted, and perhaps most importantly, not exactly who can be described as possessing a state of mind.
